My Photo

Thirtyesque Pisces-Aries cusp, walking contradiction, Guided By Voices fanatic, living in the Twin Cities. Holds a useless college degree from a land-grant university, has generally unpopular leftist political views, isn't a particularly religious lad, completely uninterested in all sports, somewhat asthmatic, geeky demeanor.

This blog started out as "Acetylenic" (hence the URL) and was taken from my misunderstanding of a GBV lyric that sounded like "your acetylene pride." I was thrilled to discover that there is an adjectival form of acetylene: acetylenic. It seemed to fit me pretty well (highly flammable; explosive; having a peculiar, unpleasant odor).

I changed the name to "Society Dome," to fit my GBV obsession (it's the name of a song from GBV frontman Robert Pollard's side project Lifeguards) and better match the tone and content of the blog. It started out a little more personal and ranty, but it's ended up being pretty much my clearinghouse for pop culture junk....frequently of an indie rock or sci-fi/fantasy nature ('cause there just isn't enough of that on the internet already!).

I also contribute infrequently to Jazz Police and New Patriot.

While I like to think of myself as a multi-dimensional fellow, this is a list of my Guided By Voices (and extended family) CD and record collection. They're a bit of an obsession. I keep it updated for my own smug satisfaction:
