So, it's over. I'm more sad about it now, several days later, but we had two nights in Chicago where it felt like we ruled the world.
Thursday night was the better show. It was about 3 hours long, fairly standard for this band, and there wasn't a bum song on the setlist. Plus I finally got to see Tobin Sprout live, and he rocked, busting out great GBV tunes from before I even knew they existed. Other than the inexplicable attempt to turn "Indian Ink" into a long jam, his opening set was worth the price of the whole trip.
Tobin Sprout setlist (The Metro, Chicago, IL -- 12/30/04):
Jabberstroker
Dodging Invisible Rays
Get Out Of My Throat
Gleemer
Ester's Day
The Crawling Backward Man
To My Beloved Martha
To Remake The Young Flyer
Indian Ink
Gas Daddy Gas

Scissors
It's Like Soul Man
GBV was sublime, they were silly, they were drunk, they were gracious. The fans were pretty well-behaved and more enthusiastic than any other crowd I've been in. They ressurected "The Club Is Open" neon sign (which was nearly outshone by the obnoxious MGD sign), and I finally got to see the cheesy slideshow I'd heard so much about (replete with a muzak version of "Window of my World" and stock nature footage: brilliant!). They opened with "Over The Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox," which I was expecting on New Year's Eve but not this night. That was possibly the most magical GBV moment out of the eleven shows I've been to. Other unexpcted tunes were "Heavy Metal Country," "If We Wait," "Liar's Tale," "Wished I Was A Giant" and "My Valuable Hunting Knife" (woo!). But the most amazing thing was that they played "Subspace Biographies," I wanted so desperately to hear that song one more time, and I get the impression that it was not on the setlist, but that Bob decided to pull it out of nowhere. We are forever grateful.

There's so much I want to say about this show. "Teenage FBI" was the best version they've ever done, "Wished I Was A Giant" became an instant new live favorite, there were so many songs I couldn't believe I was hearing, I was so happy they played "Gold Star for Robot Boy" and "Matter Eater Lad," I tried not to drink too much but then I stole one of Johnny's beers and he retaliated by getting me a shot of Jagermeister. "Exit Flagger." They went out on "Exit Flagger." Sweet.
Morning of Friday, December 31, 2004: hungover. My voice was shot after the show and I remember sitting in the back of a cab reading the setlist aloud and giggling. I wanted so badly to post it but by the time I had internet access that morning someone had beat me to it. I transcribed my notes so they'd be legible and discovered that the show ended at 2:15 AM and they played 53 songs. Not bad. We spent most of the day recovering and trying to figure out where the hell we could get dinner for eight people on New Year's Eve in Chicago. Night before we went to Goose Island and I'd hoped to spy on the Postal Blowfish but sorta chickened out. Tonight they'd be at Raw Bar which was already full. Friends of Kelly's were going to the Gingerman and I found out later that so were the DtS people that I wanted to meet. Now wishing I'd had more time to dick around on the internet in prep. for the trip. Ah, well.
We ended up eating in the Hilton restaurant, which was okay but the server was inept and slow, which fucked up our ability to get worked up into a pre-show frenzy. It was much colder that night and we took a train to the Metro. Got there just in time, I was still at the bar when the slideshow started. The place was packed already and I quickly gave up on my plan to muscle our way to the front. You'd think you could form a human wedge with eight people but it was not to be. Very sad. I still didn't have my energy back anyway. Show started and they played "Fair Touching" (yes!) followed by...the millionth performance of "Things I Will Keep." Now, it's always nice to see Doug solo on that song, but it confirmed my fear that instead of more surprises, tonight's four-hour long show would drag out all the tired warhorses. Indeed, I found myself back at the bar for "Red Ink Superman" (while some dude screamed "we'll even the score/in World War IV" in my ear) and checked the proverbial watch during "Beg for a Wheelbarrow." I had to admit to Chuck that I had obviously blown my wad the previous night.
Or did I? No, I got my second wind, it just took awhile. New Year's Eve came too soon, less than a half an hour into the show, and my legs hurt like hell, but eventually I got myself into the moment. I was rewarded with a superior Beatle Bob dance during "My Kind of Soldier," a duet with Tobin Sprout on "14 Cheerleader Coldfront," Bob's brother Jim singing on "Lethargy," another amazing performance of "Wished I Was A Giant," a crazy, out-of-control fast version of "I Am A Tree" (courtesy of Superchunk's Mad Basher Jon Wurster), a sweet "Drinker's Peace" sung to Trader Vic at the onstage bar, "Secret Star," so glad they played "Huffman" both nights, an impromptu guitar-hoedown courtesy of Doug Gillard, "Alone, Stinking, and Unafraid," "Hot Freaks" with Tobin joining in on guitar, and after our incessant chanting, "A Salty Salute" at the top of the second encore. Two nights in a row of jumping up and down with my friends in my arms, kissing my girl, pumping my fist, spilling my drinks, and screaming at the top of my lungs. Amen.

Rich T., GBV webmaster, tour manager, and godsend to the fans, has allowed some video of the show to be posted on the internets: relive the magic here thanks to longtime PB-er Jack Stenner. See, hear, touch, feel, and taste the story of our weekend in Chicago here, thanks to Thomas' natural photojournalistic urges.
Thank you Cle, LARM, and WWBD for the sweet stuff you guys hooked me up with last year.
Thank you to the best friends in the whole world who shared the best New Year's Eve ever with me: Chuck, Lori, Maggie, Thomas, Crystal, Johnny, and, of course, The Kelly.
Thank you Bob, Nate, Doug, Kevin, and Chris. We'll see you around.

For some reason, reading this post made me tear up. I guess the whole time in Chicago was so fun, it was easy to forget GBV is finished. Sad now. Must now set my hopes on a reunion show in a few years.

My thoughts exactly. Thank you, friends.

Yay! I made people cry! And I didn't even get into the post-show shenanigans: underwear jacuzzi party, five (?) pints o' Guinness, fucking around in the lobby. So wonderful.
p.s. did Chuck find out about his purple suitcase?
p.p.s. I'm sorry we didn't get both cars into the Culver's in Tomah. that was pretty satisfying for crappy road food.

Cool blog! Was there both nights too- made the long trip from Northern California to surprisingly mild Chicago. Both night were really magical- somehow ended up right up front between Bob and Doug on the 31st. Wish Tobin had opened on the 31st, otherwise no gripes! And Subspace Biographies is my favorite too- great to hear it one last time.
