Our neighbors to the north are winning the cultural war. Am I listening to Kings of Leon? Rushing out to see Ice Princess? Eating at a Chili's bar and grill? Hell, no!
Right now, the new Stars album Set Yourself On Fire is rocking my world (move over Crooked Fingers, now there's something meatier!) with its love of life, progressive politics, nostalgia, and beauty. The gurgling synths and bouncing basslines are worming their way into my heart, inspiring thoughts of treason and travel. Stars come from sunny Montreal, home to Broken Social Scene, The Arcade Fire, The Unicorns (who may or may not have broken up), The Stills, and others, sure to become the geographic media darling of the year. They just came through town, too, which is too bad for those of us who missed it (though I may get to see 'em in New York next month- stay tuned!)
Meanwhile, Don McKellar's new film Childstar made its way all the way down to Texas for SXSW. It's been a year since I first heard about it, so I sure hope they picked up distribution at the festival (so far no U.S. release dates have been announced).
...apparently the U.S. government does not approve of my, uh, humorous joke about loving Canada so much, because my browser has crashed three times while I was trying to write this damn thing, so I'm going to stop. Boy, it's a good thing that the Americans I Love® are cooking up a sequel to the great American film Hellboy. I certainly hope that they'll film this one in the United States rather than the ex-Communist Czech Republic! USA! USA! USA!
UPDATE: Childstar is playing the opening night of the 23rd Annual Minneapolis - St. Paul International Film Festival, this Friday, April 1. Yah mo b there!
The Film Festival snuck up on me this year (usually I plan it out in advance, so I can line up a little man sitter for a few films). I totally want to see Childstar...and Honey Baby...and Kung Fu Hustle (I've only seen it on the small screen)...and a bunch of others, I'm sure. Thankfully there's the Childish Film Festival, so I can catch a few *with* the lad.

Also from Montreal -- The Dears, whom I shall see soon opening for Soundtrack of Our Lives. The Dears live shows are supposed to be dramatic...

I do like The Dears (funny how sometimes the singer sounds so like Morrissey). How was the show?

The Dears were really good - i was impressed. I don't think i like their music enough to buy it, but they had a great stage presence.
